Welcome!

Welcome to the Cessna T-50/UC-78 Type Club Website. This club is dedicated to preserving the history of the Cessna T-50/UC-78 “Bamboo Bomber” aircraft, as well as serve as a resource to those who own or who are restoring Bamboo Bombers

Have T-50 or UC-78 information?

My only purpose here is to have an online outlet for the mountains of data and pictures I have accumulated over the years on this magnificent aircraft. While I, like a lot of you, grew up with Sky King and Niece Penny…they were fictional characters. I prefer to focus attention to the 18-19 year old kids who flew this aircraft for real…then went off the war.

The Cessna T-50’s 70th Anniversary Celebration at Oshkosh '09

This year’s annual event at Oshkosh was full of amazing things to see and experience. Here’s a great video compilation from “Airventure 2009”.

Jon Larson, and the Cessna T-50’s 70th Anniversary, at “Airventure 2009”

Jon Larson has long been known as the biggest supporter of the “Cessna T-50” type. (UC-78, T-50) Many feel that the aircraft type would not exist today, were it not for Mr. Larson’s efforts. Naturally, the 70th anniversary of this great aircraft was promoted and overseen by Jon, and many of the pilots there had a great time discussing their Cessna T-50s. Among other things, Jon is the Founder and Leader of our Type Club, “The Flying Bobcats” and has been associated with this aircraft for over 50 years! He is free with his advice and the type would never have survived this long without him. Enjoy the album.

Photos are slightly compressed to create the movie below. If you’d like to download a zip file archive of Terry’s very nice original photos, click here. (4.3 MB)

Resources Needed

A request from Michael (Mike) McMurtrey
I’m working on a comprehensive history of the T-50/AT-8/AT-17/UC-78/Crane which I hope to publish in 2014, the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the prototype. As planned it will include details of every one of the 5,400 airframes built, including the military units in which they served as well as civilian owners of those sold surplus, as well as many photographs and artist’s color illustrations depicting rarely seen colors and markings.

In the course of my research, I’ve come across references to many approved modifications to these airplanes. However, most of these were engineered by firms which are no longer in existence, so I’m wondering if you or other owners of these airplanes might have details.

I’m specifically looking for documentation (engineering drawings, manuals, photographs, etc.) of the following, in order to include these details in a series of scale drawings which will appear in the book:

(Of all these firms, only Serv-Aero is still in business, but much of their data was lost in a fire in 1957. However, they still have some parts for the Lycoming conversion as well as a new nose cone, so if anybody is interested, they should contact Serv-Aero directly at 831- 422-7866 and ask for Bob Perry.)

There are probably other approved mods I’m not yet aware of. I know that many Bobcat owners added BT-13 wheels/brakes/strut forks to their airplanes, but I’ve not yet come across drawings for that mod either.

Many thanks.
Michael (Mike) McMurtrey

With 235 planes registered at the Antique Airplane Association over Labor Day

Didyou ever watch someone fly your airplane., and
feel bad because he was
such a better pilot than
you are? George Mock,
Chief Pilot for the Indian
HoosierWarbirds, shown
coming out of my Bobcat,
N88878, cln 4121, did
that to me during a visit
last summer. George
drove a bus charter to
Minneapolis for a girls
athletic team, and took
time to visit us at Lake
Elmo airport. Of course
George has many more
hours and years flying
Bobcats than some of us.
He delivered my plane
from Indiana in 1990, at
which time I didn’t even
have a multi rating. He
also previously flew the
Indiana CAF T-50 before
it was moved and is a
CFI. I’m working to try to
come up to his standard!
Thanks, George.

“S

So you’re sick of the way the country is run
And you’re sick of the way rationing is done,
And you’re sic
k of standing around in line
You’re sick, you say—well, that’s just fins.
Yes, I’
m sick of the sun and the heat
And I’
m sick of the feel of my aching feet;
And I’
m sick of the mud and the jungle flies
And I’
m sick of the stench when the night mists rise;
And I’
m sick of the siren’s wailing shriek,
And I’
m sick of the groans of the wounded and weak
And I’
m sick of the sound, of the bomber’s dive,
And I’
m sick of seeing the dead alive;
And I’
m sick of the roar and noise and din,
And I’
m sick of the taste of food fro
m a tin,
And I’
m sick of slaughter—I’
m sick to my soul.
I’m sick of playing a killer’s role,
And I’
m sick of blood and death and smell
And I’
m even sick of myself as well…
But I’
m sicker still of a tyrant’s rule
And conquered, lands where the wild beasts drool.
And I’
m cured damn quick when I think of the day
When all this hell will be out of the way,
When none of this mess will have been in vain
And the lights of the world will blaze again;
And things will be as they were before,
And kids will laugh in the streets once more,
And the Axis flag will be dipped end furled
And God looks down on a peaceful world.

The captio

next up the line with the drill is Maxine
Bonham; and on top is Frances Dougherty.”

    BOBCATS ON FAA
    REGISTRY
A search on the Internet at
    www.landings.com of the FAA registry
showed 113 Bobcat’s still listed. We know
that around twenty are in museums, and
there are about twenty in flying condi- tion. Where are all the rest? The records
are divided by region and the results
showed the following: (the largest group
in Southwest are due to many “sale re- ported” with the PAA Oklahoma City ad- dress.)

    THE 'WESTERN EXECUTIVE"
“Custom built to your requirements, as little as twenty days service”, the 1950’s
brochure states. “The concealed, self contained, staircase extends, offering easy ac- cess to the spacious cabin…the high bubble windshield gives the crew full visibility
control throughout the flight. The Western Executive is superbly engineered, mov- ing with modern executives on the “move”. (Specifications show a 205 mph TAS with
330 hp engines and single engine ceiling of 10,000 ft.) (From Billy Gibson.)

    NAVY JRC BOBCATS
Since I own a Navy N3N-3 and a Bob- cat, I’ve been interested in learning more
about the rarely mentioned Navy JRC.
The books UNITED STATES NAVAL AIR
STATIONS OF V7ORLD WAR II, VOL. 1:
    EASTERN STATES; VOL. 2: WESTERN
STATES, by M.L. Shettle, JR. (Schaertel
Publishing Co., PO Box 66, Bowersville,
GA 30516) states that, “The Navy pur- chased 67 Cessna JRC Bobcats- during 1942 and 1943. A military
    version of Cessna’s five seatT-50,
the Army’s designation UC-78. Used by
air stations as light transports, the Bob- cat was also employed by Aircraft De- livery Units and Ferry Squadrons to
transport pilots to and from ferry as- signments.” (Vol. 1, p. 81).
The author frequently lists inven- .
tories of type and number of planes
at various bases, but shows only
one JRC based at NAAS Manteo,
    North Carolina. Besides being
home to a Bobcat, they also had an
    NE4 Cub, A GH Howard, and a J4F
Widgeon. And its first Squadron was “The
Jolly Rogers.” The photo at right shows
    marking of a JRC.
